Axel & Pixel (Silver Wish Games)

Axel & Pixel tells the story of the painter Axel and his dog Pixel as they embark on a fantastic journey through a surreal and dangerous dream world. Combining point-and-click gameplay and a beautiful hand-drawn environment, the game is truly unique.

Axel and Pixel plays exactly how you would expect any point and click adventure game to play. You must move between environments solving puzzles to open the passageway to the next one for you and your dog. Often times this involves finding tools, matching patterns, pressing buttons and then a ton of other random things.

There are two dozen areas in Axel and Pixel that each get progressively harder. They are also themed with the seasons so you will start in Spring and move through Winter, each changing the environment around you.

Like all great adventure games, there are several moments where you will be stumped at what to do and it seems like there are no more options. At this point you'll find yourself just scanning the screen for an indication from the cursor that you can do something. There are also some classic puzzles like untangling tangled colored wires. Luckily though, I never found myself too flustered with Axel and Pixel which to me is an indication that is a well designed adventure game.

What really kept me from falling in love with this game is the lack of story. You are out with your dog on this adventure, but there's no consistent story keeping me involved with the characters or the environments. It's more adventure just for the sake of adventure. I still enjoyed myself and the world Axel and Pixel live in, I just didn't get enough information to really feel like I was part of it versus just passing through.

Lucidity (LucasArts)

Lucidity is a whimsical and puzzle-heavy side-scrolling platform game in which players guide an imaginative young girl named Sofi through the bizarre landscape of her dreams. Sofi continually moves from left to right, and its up to gamers to safely guide the inquisitive protagonist through 27 different levels by strategically placing platforms, springs, and staircases over treacherous enemies and obstacles. Lucidity features an original music score and hand-drawn art reminiscent of Ezra Jack Keats illustrations, and players can unlock additional bonus levels by collecting fireflies that are strewn about each level.

Limbo (Playdead)

A product of the independent Danish studio Playdead, Limbo is a black-and-white, side-scrolling action game in which players control a young boy who wakes up alone in the forest. There is no dialogue, and no instructions, but moderate exploration reveals a dangerous landscape in which death is around every corner. The game presents players with a number of environmental hazards, and eventually the young boy makes his way out of the woods and into a deserted industrial sector where aggressive creatures give way to intricate puzzles.
